Dietitian, Juliette Kellow gives her advice on including alcohol in a weight loss diet. Home Remedies for Gout: Treatment, Causes, Symptoms, Diet. Caused by uric acid crystals that build up in the spaces between joints and in the connective tissues, gout results in stiffness and pain in the joints. A type of inflammatory arthritis, gout affects more men than women. Women are more likely to suffer from gout after menopause. Symptoms of Gout. Gout is often referred to as feet or toe disease. Health tips from CNM College Of Naturopathic Medicine. Natural and effective remedies, recipes and idea to promote health and wellness. Who says you can't indulge without dooming your diet? Use this handy guide to make smart, low-calorie alcohol choices. This is because one of the most common symptoms of gout is severe pain in the big toe or feet. Apart from the toe, gout can affect other joints such as the knees and wrist as well. Other symptoms of gout include: Gout first appears as nodules or . Gout attacks tend to happen in the night or the early hours of the morning. Some people may have a fever during the gout attack. It is these cases that are more likely to develop into chronic gout, as they tend to remain untreated. Causes of Gout. High levels of uric acid in the blood cause gout. When you eat foods rich in purines such as organ meats, yeast, and oily fish for example, the body breaks down the purines and produces uric acid. Under normal circumstances, uric acid is flushed out of the body through the kidneys and by urinating. However, if the body is producing too much uric acid for the kidneys to process, the levels of uric acid can rise dramatically, creating a condition called hyperuricemia. This causes needle like crystals of uric acid builds up around the joints and connective tissues that results in severe inflammation and pain. Other causes of gout and risk factors include: Genetics and Heredity: If your parents or other members in your family have gout, you are at a higher risk of developing the disease. In such cases, preventive measures such as changing your diet and reducing your alcohol consumption can help delay the onset of gout. Age and Sex: Gout affects a larger percentage of middle- aged men. Men have higher levels of uric acid in the body as compared to women and this may be why this happens. Where women are concerned, gout cases are found mainly in post- menopausal women. Alcohol Abuse: Drinking alcohol especially beer is said to cause gout. Yeast is considered the culprit out here as a diet heavy with yeast- based products may also lead to gout. Alcohol also interferes with the removal of uric acid in the body and therefore leads to high levels causing gout. Eating a Diet High in Protein: Having a diet that mainly consists of red meats, organ meats and oily fish can make you more susceptible to the development of gout. A sedentary Life / Lack of Exercise: Obesity is also linked to the development of gout. A regular exercise routine can help boost immunity and prevent obesity. Other Medical Conditions: If you suffer from other diseases such as diabetes or high blood pressure, you may be more predisposed to developing gout. Medication: Certain medications could cause a rise in uric acid levels in the body. Studies show that diuretic drugs used to treat high blood pressure, anti- rejection drugs used after transplant surgery and even aspirin can increase the level of uric acid in the body and cause gout. Research indicates that some people may have an enzyme defect that could interfere with the body. This could also lead to gout. A prolonged exposure to lead can cause gout as well. Remedies for Gout. Medical attention is essential in the treatment of gout, but the condition can be managed effectively with natural measures as well. Natural methods of management prove more effective in the long run and also pose little to no risk of side effects. For this reason, doctors also stress the importance of lifestyle and diet modifications in the management of gout. Medications typically include non- steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs to reduce the painful symptoms of gout. If the pain is severe, stronger doses may be required. Prescription drugs such as Colchicine or corticosteroids help reduce pain and swelling as well. While medical treatment may be effective in treating the painful symptoms as and when they surface, it does nothing to prevent attacks from recurring or from the gout turning chronic. For this, natural cures for gout are more successful by far. Some gout relief home remedies you can try are: Lime is not only an excellent source of vitamin C but the citric acid found in lime also helps dissolve uric acid. The vitamin C in lime also cures sore joints and strengthens the tissues in the body. Drink a glass of water with the juice of half a lime at least twice a day for visible results. Make a paste out of water and charcoal powder (half cup). ![]() Apply this to the affected and swollen joint for effective relief from pain. This is one of the best home remedies for gout in the foot. Soak the foot in this mixture for thirty minutes at a time. These herbs have anti- inflammatory properties can reduce the symptoms of gout. Consult with a trained herbal doctor to find out correct dosages and to prevent overuse. Try a capsule of safflower to improve blood circulation and reduce pain and inflammation in the case of gout. Blend mustard powder along with whole- wheat powder and water and apply to the swollen join. You can leave this paste on overnight for the best results. Soaking the affected foot in a bath of warm water and ground ginger can treat gout in the toes and feet. Soaking the feet in this mix increases the elimination of uric acid by inducing perspiration. Diet for Gout. One of the most effective ways to prevent gout from developing is by changing your diet and eating habits. Some suggestions for diet for gout include: Including cherries in your diet. Eat a minimum of 2. Do this preferably as soon as you get up in the morning. Eating apples can neutralize the levels of uric acid in the body. ![]() The malic acid found in apples provides relief from gout pain. Eat an apple after every meal for this to be effective. Bananas are high in potassium required to treat gout. Potassium helps transform crystals of uric acid into liquid form making them easier to be flushed out of the body. A banana diet for four days can works wonders in treating symptoms of a gout attack. This reduces the pressure put on the joints and can lessen the pain as well. Using alternative hot and cold compresses on the affected area has been known to help relieve pain and inflammation. Apply a cold compress to the area for approximately ten minutes and then place a hot compress on the same area for another ten minutes. Gout attacks are more frequent if you are obese. Losing ten pounds or more can decrease the number of attacks significantly so start exercising and controlling your diet at the earliest. Regular exercise also helps the system flush out extra uric acid and prevents any build up from happening. Exercise also improves blood circulation and this can in turn reduce inflammation during an attack. Water, while keeping us alive, just doesn't get the pulses racing. Dear Mark, I just watched your video about the 2 minute salad; simple, fast, and no measuring. ![]() I agree with the primal way of eating and I’m torn between the freelance style of PB and structure of The Zone. What is your opinion of The Zone? First, let me thank Rob for his question. I’ve had a lot of conversations about The Zone and other heavily publicized diet plans. It’s fair, I think, to look at the good and the bad of the diet. Unless you’re talking about the grapefruit diet or similarly comical fad, diets generally have to have at least some positive point(s) to gain a decent following, as The Zone has. Nonetheless, what can initially look like a rational foundation begins to show cracks when you look at how the philosophy actually plays out. CROSSFIT JOURNAL Search the world's information, including webpages, images, videos and more. Google has many special features to help you find exactly what you're looking for. I don’t know about the diet since I haven’t tried it, but I find the thought of the structured part to be almost freeing. Then I don’t have to think about what. The Zone’s Positives? It suggests vegetables and fruit as the primary sources of carbohydrates and fiber. ![]() Experts review Timothy Ferriss’s 4-Hour Body diet plan, evaluate his theories, and discuss the pros and cons of Timothy Ferriss’s health advice. It suggests more protein than most popular diets. It appreciates the value of omega- 3s. And finally, it pays homage to the diet- hormone connection (although I take issue with how the theory gets applied in the actual diet prescription). The Zone, I’ll say, isn’t by far the worst diet out there. It gets a few key things right or somewhat close. That said, however, I think there’s big room for improvement. Since you asked, here are my “beefs” with The Zone. The “Moderate” Hobby Horse. In Dr. Sears’ words, “Any diet that uses the word high or low to describe it is hormonally unsustainable. ![]() The 6 most popular toxins Americans coat their bodies with, and then wonder why they're suffering from inflammation, rashes, skin allergies and cancer.![]() The only diet that can maintain hormonal balance for a lifetime must use the word moderate to describe it.” Just from a rhetorical standpoint, this statement gets under my skin. Yes, monosaturated fats are great. So, why the miniscule serving? And then there’s the commandment about only the leanest meats. Sure, I get the fat- toxin connection, and it’s why I tend to often (but not always) choose relatively leaner meats, but this has nothing to do with The Zone recommendation. Sears, pardon my saying, just seems like another fat- o- phobe. But, with the higher carb allotment, I guess fat gets you into more trouble. Didn’t see that mentioned. Hmmm.)Too High in Carbs. I already said that I applauded the focus on veggies and the secondary role of fruits. It’s true that The Zone downplays the role of grains, and I like that as well. Sears talks insulin regulation, but the rubber doesn’t exactly meet the road in The Zone diet. For an eating plan to truly facilitate hormonal balance, you have to put the brakes on the insulin response. This means low carb. But that’s a bad word in The Zone. ![]() Hunger. Without the fat, most people are going to be hungry on this diet. I know I would be. I’m not one for diets. Hunger sets in (on a regular basis, no less), and too many well- meaning people are set up for failure. In contrast, the Primal Blueprint is a sustainable lifestyle that offers a model for eating that a person can realistically stick with over time. Too Structured. Along with the hunger issue, imposing too much structure is too hard (or tedious) over time. I guess it might be easier if you took a Sharpie to all your dinner plates for the assigned pie graph. The plan even goes so far as to set out specific time intervals for eating. For example, eat within an hour after getting up. Eat dinner within 2 . You should eat five times a day total. The more structure, the more confusion and temptation there is when a dieter gets off track. Again, I’m all about what’s sustainable. Experience has taught me that the fewer and more simple the guidelines, the better. Maybe that’s just me. On a true low- carb program, the more you learn to burn fat, the less hunger becomes an issue and the less often you need to eat in a structured fashion to sustain energy. Protein Suggestions. While the 3. 0% is more than most dietary organizations or popular diet plans recommend, the absolute hard and fast rule again doesn’t sit right. You don’t need to be an Olympic athlete to benefit from more than 3. And, no, it won’t necessarily turn to fat – unless you drive it there with the higher carbs. Finally, Dr. Sears touts soy as one of the best sources, saying that using soy as a primary protein source could be the healthiest choice overall. Most of you know my take on soy, and I stand by my opinion. The research in that vein keeps coming. Too bad The Zone hasn’t caught up with the times on that one. So, you’ve heard my take now. I’d love to hear your comments. Anyone here tried it before and want to offer up some personal anecdotes? Thanks for reading. As always, thanks for the great questions. Many books have board book editions but aren’t always available at your library or bookstore. The 2. 1 board books for babies and toddlers listed here are generally found in this format anywhere you find books. If you have a favorite board book you don’t see listed here please leave a comment for me and other readers about why it’s your favorite! How Big Is a Pig? I love the felt illustrations, the detail amazes me and helps distract me from noticing that I have read it 2. The story itself is great too, it focuses on opposites in the farm yard with a zippy rhyming text. My daughter loves taking this one in the stroller while I run and because it’s a board book I can give it to her without worrying that after a few miles it’s ripped and ruined. Doggies by Sandra Boynton has been one of my daughter’s favorite books for ages. If you aren’t familiar with it, it’s a simple counting book about dogs, their different barks and one pesky cat. Toddlers love barking along with it so it’s a great book for places where they don’t have to be shushed, it’s not a great one for quiet only places like a church service. Moo Baa La La Laby Sandra Boynton always makes me laugh. ![]() There is something about the facial expressions her animals always have that crack me up, and lets me honest if the book is good for the adult reading it, it’s always a plus. Super bright colors on each page is a huge plus for my baby girl as I flip the pages, and even though she doesn’t get the humor yet she will soon enough and it’s a book that will grow with her. Snuggle Puppy by Sandra Boynton. The story is simply a little love song about all the ways the dog loves the puppy, simple and touching. As an educator something I love is that the dogs don’t have an obvious race , they don’t even have an obvious gender which is perfect. Regardless of who loves who in your family your child can see you in the dog and themselves in the puppy! I think that is the perfect valentine! My son didn’t warm up to this book right away, but now not only does he love it he is very very specific that only I can read it to him . It’s become a big favorite in our house. Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown isn’t an innovative choice but I make babies who love this book. My son could be “Goodnight Mooned ” to sleep as a baby if we simply recited the words and while my daughter isn’t at that point yet she sits happily listening to our voices as we read it to her. I will be the first to admit I didn’t always love this book but as a mom it’s been more than a book, it’s been a signal to my son that it’s bedtime and I hope that it becomes part of my daughter’s routine soon too. The story is all about a firefly looking for another firefly but mistaking all different light for a friend. Toddlers love this book because it gives them a chance to be bossy and say ” No that’s a flashlight” to the firefly. The text is the right length for little guys but not boring for older kids , and I need to mention the little lights are really quite magical in a dark bedroom, especially if you are in a place that doesn’t have fireflies! Learn the Alphabet with North.
![]() West Coast Native Art by Ryan Cranmer (and others) was an amazing gas station find. Yes I said gas station. I ran in for some diet coke and came out with an alphabet book ! This book is amazing, bright beautiful and even though I bought it for my daughter since it’s bright colors and sturdy pages are perfect for a baby, my almost 4 year old son adores it. ![]() ![]() What I love is when he reads it to her . The Native art is gorgeous and if you are unfamiliar with North West coast art you are in for a treat. Clap Your Handsby Lorinda Bryan Cauley is a rhythmic rhyming book that suggests movements for the readers ( perhaps when she is sitting or standing she will follow along) with fun and silly pictures of kids mixed with animals doing the actions. What probably appeals to my 3 month old are the bright colors on the white background and the rhythm of the text. Also it’s a fun book to have an older sibling join in with and do the actions as you read. Beddy- bye, Baby: A Touch- and- Feel Bookby Karen Katz is a cute bedtime book for the toddler crowd. ![]() There’s no shortage of things to be mad about in late capitalism. Pretty high on the list, though, is the Eat, Pray, Love brand of pseudoscience promoted by Gwyneth. Fumbly flappy infant hands have a a hard time hitting the small textured sections. Ideally they would be larger so the child can explore as the adult reads . It’s not a huge complaint and I love Karen Katz so I would still recommend this book for families with little ones. Where Is Baby’s Pumpkin? Karen Katz. This lift and flap book is the newest addition to our Karen Katz collection. My son adores these books. I read this in the check out line 3 times and he was asking for more before I could get my groceries in the fridge. I like this book because it’s a cute and gentle introduction to Halloween and all the creatures that go along with it. Also there are fun textures to many of the illustrations which help keep little hands busy! Edited for 2. 01. Even though this is a Halloween book both my kids loved it and it’s never been put away since I bought it in 2. It’s easily one of my daughter’s all time favorites. This Little Chick by John Lawrence is just about the perfect board book for my daughter right now, she didn’t even try to eat it! The rhymes are melodic the text full of animal sounds is spot on for our littlest readers . My son and I had fun reading this old favorite to my daughter for the first time. We have the board book edition and it’s been loved for a long time at our house, although since our return from the Calgary Stampede it’s been read constantly. The text is simple, the drawings are charming and the book covers all the basics of what a cowboys does day and night. My son loves that Cowboy small has a guitar, and is pretty fond of the part when he gets bucked off a bronco as well. Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? The bold colors of the illustrations by Eric Carle are perfect for catching infant’s attention and will continue to grab it through the years. With the turn of each page the reader is left wondering what’s next, and if the reader is my son he will cut you off to tell you what’s coming next before you have a chance to turn the page. There are other titles in the series , including ; Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?, Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See? My daughter actually sits looking at these pages instead of simply trying to eat the book, which in my opinion is a great review from a 6 month old! Chicka Chicka ABC by Bill Martin Jr. My son loves this book and it’s the perfect amount of text for a toddler, the illustrations by Lois Ehlert are so bright and bold that even very young babies will respond to it! A must have for all bookshelves. Everywhere Babies by Susan Meyers and Marla Frazee . This book celebrates all sorts of babies and all the every day things babies do. So maybe you are thinking ” What’s so great about babies and text that rhymes?” nothing, that isn’t what makes this book so awesome. I love this book because of it’s diversity, inclusion, and acceptance of all babies and families. What I adore about the diversity of the illustrations is that readers are left to put whatever assumption we wish on the families in the book. What I assumed were two mommies my husband thought was a husband and wife, I thought a lady was a grandma and my son said it was just a older mom. This is why I love this book, my daughter doesn’t see why this message is outstanding, what she does see is all sorts of happy babies in all sorts of families being the norm and this is the world we want her to know. Good Night, Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann is simply one of my favorite books ever. I love it and love that my daughter doesn’t fuss when I read it to her because it was a special book for my son when he was little and it’s a book he will still curl up and read quietly with us, making it fun cuddle time for all three of us. If you aren’t familiar with this book it’s all about a sneaky gorilla who unlocks all the animals at the zoo and they quietly follow the zoo keeper home and climb into bed with him, until his wife wakes up! I love this book cause I relate to the zoo keepers wife , when I wake up there is always a sneaky 3 year old gorilla in my bed! One Duck Stuck by Phyllis Root looks like an everyday book , but inside you will find a brilliantly repetitive storyline, that promotes teamwork, and mathematical skills! See a duck gets stuck in the muck and while others are eager to help the duck isn’t unstuck until they all work together. My class was nuts about this book a few years ago and my son has greatly enjoyed it since infancy. Don’t pass this book up. Dinosaur Roar! Board Book by Paul and Henrietta Stickland and is a board book that I’ve read often enough that I don’t need to look at the book. The premise is simple, using 2 different dinosaurs every page illustrates a pair of opposites. Toddlers and young preschoolers adore this book and I can’t blame them, it’s adorable and a great tool for teaching ! My son loves how funny the illustrations are and clearly enjoys the rigidity of the opposite concepts. The Busy Little Squirrelby Nancy Tafuri is a great book for babies and toddlers. The readers follow along with a squirrel as she gathers nuts , seeds and berries for the winter. As she hunts for her treasure she encounters many animals who all make their respective sounds and ask her to play, of course she is too busy and continues on. Even if you have no real animals near by books like this one are a great way to authentically teach very young kids. Bye- Bye Time by Elizabeth Verdick is a great book for toddlers who are anxious about separation. When I worked in a childcare setting bye bye time was a huge source of anxiety for many students, books like this one are such great tools for parents and teachers. There are wonderful tips at the back that in my experience are all great advice. This book is just one of many by the same author that are all wonderful tools for families and classrooms. A Guide to Healthy Weight Loss: Three weeks on a low- fat vegan diet gets you on the road to your healthy weight goal. Of the many ways to lose weight, one stands out as by far the most healthful. When you build your meals from a generous array of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and beans—that is, healthy vegetarian choices—weight loss is remarkably easy. And along with it come major improvements in cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, and many other aspects of health. The message is simple: Cut out the foods that are high in fat and devoid of fiber, and increase the foods that are low in fat and full of fiber. This low- fat, vegan diet approach is safe and easy—once you get the hang of it. Getting started can seem a bit daunting. It is often hard to imagine doing anything—be it a diet, new exercise regimen, or any other new, healthy habit—forever. Try this: Follow the diet approach outlined here for just three weeks. That will give you enough time to adjust to new flavors and will also allow you to start significant weight loss and see other positive health changes. Participants in the Physicians Committee’s weight loss study who switched to a vegan diet reported improvements in digestion and regularity and many also said they just felt better overall. The best way to do this approach is to follow the diet completely for three weeks. This means no sneaking ranch dressing onto your salad, adding egg whites to muffin batter, or having a bit of chicken with dinner. Only by doing the diet all the way will you be able to reap all the benefits and avoid lapses that can lead to weight gain. So let’s get started! Choose the day when you would like to start the diet. Weigh yourself before you start and keep track of your weight during the three weeks. Also, keep a record of what you are eating. Keeping a food record and a journal of how you feel while you’re on the diet will help you monitor your progress.
